About MFS

Maine's First Ship is organized to research, build, and operate a reconstruction of the 1607-1608, Popham Colony's pinnace, VIRGINIA. Originally built during 1607-1608 at the mouth of the Kennebec River, our new VIRGINIA symbolizes the birth of Maine's ship-building tradition and will help celebrate the 400th anniversary of English settlement in the New World. Through a wide variety of educational programs before, during, and after construction, she will be used to increase the public's awareness and understanding of Maine's place in early European exploration.
