Maine's First Ship will build the pinnace VIRGINIA, a reconstruction of the first English ship built in North America, to celebrate and honor the beginning of Maine's 400-year-old shipbuilding tradition at Popham Colony in 1607. Future operations on the Kennebec River and along the Maine coast will enable people to experience and learn about life, sailing and shipbuilding in 1607. Education and Public Programs will inform and inspire people of all ages. |

Maine's First Ship commemorates the birth of Maine's shipbuilding industry through reconstruction of the pinnace, VIRGINIA, built at the Popham Colony in 1607, and advances understanding of the early English discovery of Maine by ship. Maine's First Ship is committed to: • Increasing public awareness and understanding of Maine's place in early European exploration. • Researching, designing, building and operating a reconstruction of the first ship VIRGINIA, built at the Popham Colony in 1607. • Involving volunteers in significant ways in reconstruction and operation. • Developing a broad range of interactive education programs focusing on the building of the first ship and creation of the Popham Colony. • Distinguishing the building of this ship in 1607 as the birth of Maine's shipbuilding tradition. |
